Understanding back pain and movement
Back pain has different causes, and pain alone does not identify a disc problem. The location of symptoms, any leg symptoms and the activities that aggravate or ease pain help guide assessment. Ongoing or recurring pain deserves an individual review rather than the same exercise programme for everyone.
Your physiotherapy assessment
- Discuss when symptoms began, previous episodes, work demands, sleep and your goals.
- Check movements such as bending, walking and changing position, within your tolerance.
- Review strength and any leg symptoms; identify whether a medical assessment is needed.
- Agree on practical goals and review how your daily function changes over time.
A plan built around your needs
A plan may combine gradual activity, appropriate strength and mobility exercises, and advice on lifting or changing positions during the day. Hands-on treatment may be considered alongside exercise when suitable. The aim is to build confidence in everyday movement, with the programme adjusted to your response.
Preparing for your visit
Bring any existing reports and describe the tasks you find difficult, such as getting out of bed, sitting at work or lifting. Keep a note of symptoms that travel into the leg. Exercises and activity levels should be selected after assessment, not copied from someone with different symptoms.
Frequently asked questions
Does back pain always mean a slipped disc?
No. Back pain has several possible causes. An assessment helps decide the next step; symptoms should not be used to self-diagnose a disc injury.
Will I need a scan before physiotherapy?
A scan is not automatically required for every episode of back pain. The clinician considers your history and examination and may recommend medical review or imaging if indicated.
Should I rest until all the pain goes away?
Prolonged bed rest is generally unhelpful for ordinary back pain. Discuss comfortable activity and a gradual return to your routine; new or severe symptoms need assessment.
How many appointments will I need?
There is no fixed number for everyone. Your symptoms, assessment findings, goals and progress guide the review schedule.
