An individual assessment before a training plan
A painful movement does not identify the injury by itself. Discuss how the problem started, your previous injuries and any recent change in training. Existing medical advice, scans or restrictions help guide the next step. New injuries may need medical assessment before exercise progression.
What your sports physiotherapy assessment covers
- Discuss your sport, training schedule, symptoms and the activities you want to return to.
- Assess relevant movement, strength, balance and control using tasks appropriate to your injury.
- Review pain, swelling or instability and consider whether referral or further medical advice is needed.
- Set practical milestones and agree how to monitor your response between sessions.
Rebuilding capacity, step by step
A rehabilitation plan may include mobility, strength, balance and movement-control exercises, with activity adjusted to your symptoms. Later work can reflect your sport: running, changing direction, landing or reaching, where appropriate. The starting point and progressions are chosen individually rather than copied from another athlete.
A gradual return to sport
Returning to daily activity, modified practice, full training and competition are different steps. Progress should take account of function, confidence, injury-specific requirements and the response during and after activity. Less pain alone does not mean you are ready for every sporting demand. If symptoms increase, the next step may be to reduce the load and review the plan.
Preparing for your appointment
Bring available reports, advice from your treating clinician and a brief account of your usual training. Explain what a successful return would look like, including the movements you need for your sport. After an operation, rehabilitation must also follow the surgeon’s protocol and precautions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I train while recovering?
It depends on the injury and your symptoms. Modified activity may be appropriate, but painful or restricted tasks should be reviewed rather than pushed through without advice.
How do you decide when I can return to sport?
The decision considers the injury, your movement and strength, sport-specific demands and your response to progressively harder activity. Medical clearance may also be needed.
Is sports physiotherapy only for competitive athletes?
No. Recreational players, runners and people returning to an active routine can also discuss rehabilitation goals and suitable progression.
Can you promise a return before my next match?
No fixed return date or recovery outcome can be guaranteed. The plan follows your assessment and progress rather than a competition deadline.
