Understanding knee pain in daily activities
Knee symptoms may follow an injury, a change in activity or develop gradually. Swelling, stiffness, locking or giving way are useful details to discuss. The same painful task can have different causes, so the starting point is understanding your knee rather than assuming every problem is arthritis.
Your physiotherapy assessment
- Discuss injury history, swelling, previous treatment and activities that bring on symptoms.
- Assess knee bending and straightening and observe walking or a suitable functional task.
- Check strength and movement control around the knee and hip, as appropriate.
- Choose goals such as easier stairs, a more comfortable walk or a staged return to activity.
A plan built around your needs
Depending on the findings, rehabilitation may include knee and hip strengthening, mobility work, balance practice and gradual loading. Activity may be adjusted while symptoms settle. After surgery or a diagnosed injury, the plan should follow the treating clinician’s precautions and recovery stage.
Preparing for your visit
Explain whether pain is worse going up or down stairs, after sitting or during sport. Bring previous surgical instructions or reports if available. Your home programme should reflect your ability and symptoms, with progression reviewed rather than increased on a fixed timetable.
Frequently asked questions
Can physiotherapy help if stairs hurt?
An assessment can identify relevant movement, strength and activity factors. Exercises and a gradual approach to stairs may be included when appropriate.
Is every knee pain caused by arthritis?
No. Knee pain can follow an injury, repetitive activity or other conditions. Examination and medical review, when needed, help clarify the cause.
Can I continue running or exercising?
That depends on pain, swelling, stability and the underlying problem. The plan may temporarily change the type, volume or intensity of activity before a gradual return.
Do I need to bring my operation notes?
If you have had knee surgery, bring available reports and rehabilitation precautions. These help the physiotherapist plan safely around your surgeon’s advice.
